What the hell is ALS?

If you’ve been a little perplexed by all the ice-bucket drenching all over Facebook recently, here’s the down-low on that!

The Ice Bucket Challenge involves dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head, this is done to promote awareness of the disease know as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The challenge aims to encourage donations towards research on the disease as well as to create awareness of the crippling effects of the disease.

Basically the challenge dares a nominated person to be filmed, while having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and then challenging others to do the same within 24 hours, or they will forfeit by having to donate to the cause. While I find the concept of dumping water over your head in order to avoid having to donate to a very serious cause a little bit confusing and counterproductive, there is no doubt that the challenge is both entertaining and definitely creating awareness!

The Rhodes University SRC page boasts a few videos of students rising to the challenge and joining with huge names who have also completed the challenge in some very big and very entertaining ways! Do yourself a favour and check out the videos on Youtube and then decide for yourself whether this is indeed a worthy way of creating awareness or whether you would rather donate to the cause.
