UJ qualified for the semi-finals of varsity football tournament after drawing with University of Limpopo 1-1 at the Bunting AW Muller stadium to finish on top of the log standings.

UJ will do battle against the University of Free-state for a place in the final on the 8th of September at the Soweto campus Sports Complex. It promises to be a fiercely contested encounter as the teams played to a draw when they met earlier in round-robin stage.

Coach Carnell praised the team for their great perfomances through-out the competition, which has seen them progress to the semi-finals. “I’m very happy with my players. They have done a superb job in their debut season. We’re unbeaten and we’ve set to get a semi-final and we’ve gone further in securing the advantage of it being at home, so I’m very happy,” he told Soccer Laduma.

It has been a remarkable tournament for the varsity cup “newcomers”, under the guidance of former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell. The team finished the round-robin stage unbeaten, having got the better of last year’s finalists UP-TUKS and NMMU in the process.
