UJ SECURE PLACE IN VARSITY FOOTBALL FINAL

Final

UJ earned a place in the final of the Varsity Football tournament after beating the University of Free-State on penalties at the Soweto Sports Complex on Monday Night.

It was a thrilling encounter as the game ended with the scores level at 2-2, before UJ kept their cool to win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

UJ will do battle against last year’s champions UP-TUKS in what promises to be fierce Gauteng derby on the 15th September at the Soweto Sports Complex. UJ will go into the final with the advantage as they have already beaten TUKS, 4-0, in the earlier round-robin stages of the competition. However, they shouldn’t rest on their laurels as TUKS will be out to prove a point.

The crowd were treated to a spectacle before the match when the Minister of Sport, Mr. Fikile ‘Razzmatazz’ Mbalula made an appearance at the match. The Minister made a grand entrance as he was flown in pitch-side in a helicopter, to present the Varsity Football trophy. Mr. Mbalula lauded the performance of UJ with one of his infamous remarks on his twitter account. “@MbalulaFikile Well done UJ boys, bunch of winners, going through to the finals,” he tweeted.
