A must win for TUKS and UWC

Varsity Football 2014

There has been much chatter around the state of UWC’s pitch and it’s a challenge the defending champions, UP-Tuks, have to overcome if they are to secure a semi-final spot.

UWC will be playing their fourth home game of the competition and will be relying on their familiarity with the conditions to help them secure an upset.

The home side are currently sixth on the log and are two points off fourth spot. They need to claim maximum points against Tuks and rely on other results going their way if they want to remain in the running to claim a semi-final spot.

Tuks, on the other hand, head to the Cape sitting in third position after claiming three wins and a draw from their five matches. One of those wins occured in Cape Town when the Pretoria students beat UCT 2-1 in the second round of the competition.

Both sides are coming off the back of stalemates, UWC were held to a 1-1 draw by Limpopo while Tuks surrendered a two goal lead to NWU in a hard fought 2-2 draw.

A win for Tuks will see them being guaranteed a semi-final spot but a win for the home side will be more valuable as it means they remain in the hunt to claim fourth spot, anything less than a win will see them fall out of contention.

The game takes place on Monday, August 25 at the UWC stadium.
